The Fire Department was called to the two-story home to douse a fire on the first floor of the home at 3:36 p.m.
A resident from the home was evaluated in a Huron Valley Ambulance after evacuating the house prior to the arrival of the Fire Department. While the man was being evaluated, his wife arrived on scene. Multiple fire trucks and police cars still blocked the road near the damaged house.
The firefighters rescued the couple’s cat from the house while extinguishing the fire. Ann Arbor Fire Department Battalion Chief Steven Lowe said the cat didn’t appear to have any injuries. The Ann Arbor Fire Department also evacuated three cats at a basement fire Thursday.
“The cat’s fine,” Lowe said. “It hasn’t bit anyone yet, so it seems all right.”
Lowe added that the fire was contained to one room in the two-story house. As of 4 p.m., the origin of the fire was unknown.
“There was pretty heavy smoke but minimal fire damage,” he said.
Damage estimations were also unknown as of 4 p.m., although an inspector was in route to help assess damages. Lowe said the fire was confined to the contents of the house, and didn’t get into the structure of the building. Smoke damage, however, was a more pertinent issue.
“Couches, clothes, everything will have smoke damage,” Lowe said.
